THE ONGOING MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES THAT CONFRONT OLDER AMERICANS

Dr. John H. Braccio talks with Dave Akerly on the “Morning Wake-Up With Dave Akerly” radio show, on 5/22/18 on WLNS, 1320 a.m.in Lansing, Michigan about THE ONGOING MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES konya merkez kadın escort THAT CONFRONT OLDER AMERICANS. With the increasing age of the baby boomers, the age related mental health issues only increase. While 20% of Americans over 55 have a particular mental health disorder, and 67% in nursing homes suffer from mental health and behavior problems, only 3% are receiving treatment. Concerns about why this happens relate to such views as this is just normal in aging persons with declining abilities and chronic illnesses to a belief seeing “a shrink” is a sign of weakness. We all need to voice our concerns to help any way possible. Isolation and chronic illness can lead to depression which sadly can lead to suicide in some cases if not treated. Of all age groups, older Americans have the highest suicide rate. There is a need for society and the professions of medical and psychological health to work together to help an under-treated population in great need.
