Respect their preferences. 7. Encourage your child to be involved in read-a-thons. 8. Point at letters and words on signs encountered. 9. Have your child write book reports and private diaries consistent with their age. 10. Explain vocabulary to help your child understand more quickly as you read. This does not eliminate the need for children to also learn vocabulary on their own. 11. Have the family read the same book and discuss it. 12. Have your child read to you as you pay attention.
