I believe it is safe to say a love of reading is the key to unlocking all the knowledge in the world and making it available for your child. The following are some activities to help your child develop a love for reading: 1. Read to your child from day one or some say even before birth. 2. Find times to read that are comfortable for both of you. 3. To have some predictable times will better guarantee reading always occurs. 4. Read with enthusiasm and joy to model these behaviors that hopefully they will develop. 5. Have a wide variety of reading materials in the house ranging from comic books to classical literature. The availability of e-book readers is becoming more important day by day. 6. Allow your children choices on what they read and do not let your interests interfere with their reading development. Respect their preferences. 7. Encourage your child to be involved in read-a-thons. 8. Point at letters and words on signs encountered. 9. Have your child write book reports and private diaries consistent with their age. 10. Explain vocabulary to help your child understand more quickly as you read. This does not eliminate the need for children to also learn vocabulary on their own. 11. Have the family read the same book and discuss it. 12. Have your child read to you as you pay attention. Three good quotations on reading are: 1.TODAY A READER, TOMORROW A LEADER. Margaret Fuller. THE PERSON WHO DESERVES MOST PITY IS A LONESOME ONE ON A RAINY DAY WHO DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO READ. Benjamin Franklin. 3. ONCE YOU LEARN TO READ,YOU WILL BE FOREVER FREE. Frederick Douglas.
