Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that is triggered by an extreme traumatic event personally experienced or as a witness to it. Symptoms may start within one month after extreme traumatic events or may occur many months or even years after them. Symptoms generally are broken into the four following areas: 1. Recurrent and strongly unwanted distressing memories of the traumatic event. 2. Flashbacks in the form of reliving the extreme traumatic event over and over again. 3. Dreams or nightmares that upset the person about the extreme traumatic event. 4. Severe physical reactions and emotional and/or physical distress reactions to something that reminds the person of the traumatic event. Typical causes are—COMBAT/WAR. SEXUAL ABUSE/RAPE. CHILDHOOD ABUSE. A MAJOR ACCIDENT. MARITAL ABUSE. THREATENED WITH A WEAPON. Typical outcomes are—MARITAL PROBLEMS AND DIVORCE. ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION. LOW SELF-ESTEEM. ISOLATION. SUICIDE IDEATION AND EVEN SUICIDE.   Some combination of therapy and medication have been found to be helpful to help treat PTSD.
